VW testing a 5 cylinder Golf R

Volkswagen has apparently been testing a Golf R on the Nürburgring that uses the 5 cylinder engine from the Audi RS3. I don't know what the odds of this powerplant being offered on the production model, but early estimates place its horsepower around the 400 range and give it a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds.

I highly doubt that VW will go this way for the next gen Golf R. Its more than likely that it will retain its powerful four cylinder turbo. VW has already confirmed that the EA888 engine is capable of putting out up to 400hp.

At least they are exploring alternative engine options for the Golf R. Most likely they are trying to determine what other configurations allow them to deliver solid performance figures, without resulting in any issues with emissions.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Gold sounds fantastic with this setup? Found some footage of it testing at the Nürburgring and I fully support this move. The VR6 would be welcomed too.

Amazed by how it sounds and that's just an OE spec setup. Some headers and an exhaust that lets it breath better will go a long way.
Sure sounds like a job for Armytrix.

It does sound really good, but I think anyone looking for this powerplant would rather just have the RS3. And with all the scrutiny that VW is currently under, I don't think there are going to risk mismatching different powertrains.
