VW kills off the hybrid GTI

I've seen seeing a lot of articles saying that VW has decided against placing a hybrid powertrain in the next gen GTI. This probably comes as good news to fans and current owners who hoped the GTI would retain the infamous 2.0l turbo. The updated EA888 engine is likely to come in two different tunes. The standard at 252bhp and a more powerful 286bhp TCR model. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/v...hybrid-killed/

Its a shame that VW is doing this during a time that Hybrids are taking off and are just about to on the performance end.
My guess is if Honda released a hotter Type R, VW would have stepped in without hesitation.

This isn't a big deal, as their ID lineup should be hitting the market in the next year or two. Most buyers with an interest in a performance hatch are petrol heads and VW probably didn't want to risk narrowing their audience.

I guess it means more for Audi and at levels that will grab some potential VW buyers.
After seeing the new Audi A3 sedan release, its been followed a lot by VW enthusiasts that have no problem downsizing just to have it. I believe the next step should be a hybrid powertrain.

If any of their performance models are going to get electrified, it would make more sense for it to be the Golf R. The price hike that a hybrid powertrain would bring, would be less of an obstacle for those opting for the top end trim anyways.

At this point with the current cuts to the Golf line up I have doubts.
It seems that over time Audi will get all the latest and greatest with VW later offering cheaper versions.
