Is this the new Golf MK8?

There are a bunch of articles going around suggesting that someone has managed to catch a video of the 2020 Golf over in South Africa. VW has already teased it with a sketch, but its worth having a look at before the video gets taken down.

Hard to know if this is actually the new model, but it does look like there have been some changes over the Mk7. Since they also updated the Jetta, I think we should see a nicely tweaked new body style.

I'm hoping that there have also been some updates under the hood. I know VW has been cutting down on their engine options across the lineup but we should still see some high output numbers for the GTI and R.

I have little hope right now for anything really impressive till hybrid systems are really worked in and VW has done some revisions.

The rumored 400hp output of the upcoming Golf R might be a bit optimistic imo. And to be honest what good is all that additional power if its not usable during daily driving?

Sometimes car makers have to up the numbers just to look good and competitive on paper. In the end people will go with brands they trust.
Honda is in the lead, even when falling behind on raw torque and power, they might still have the upper hand.

I don't think its unrealistic if VW implements a full on hybrid powertrain, like there have been rumors of. I see no better model to introduce it on.

Mild-hybrids still have a way to go and from the numbers i've seen its only in the 2025's and on that more reliance on electric power will be in demand.

Another unclad model was recently spotted in Germany. Looks like this what we will be getting for the next gen Golf. New hood, new headlamps and a updated lower grille.

It sure looks like we'll get more Audi design traits and this rendering reveals some of what we're seeing in spy shots:
