VW Golf GTI TCR Concept Debuts At Wörthersee

Every year, Volkswagen attends the annual Wörthersee GTI Meeting but they don’t do so empty handed. This year’s meeting saw the debut of two apprentice-made models and the Golf GTI TCR concept.

While most concepts look cartoonish and out of this world, the Golf GTI TCR actually seems to be production ready. In fact, the motorsport-inspired Golf GTI TCR is slated to start rolling off the assembly line later this year.

Inspired by the Golf TCR that competes in Touring Car Racing, the GTI TCR was designed to be a track worthy version of the front-drive hot hatch. To that end, VW has stuck a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under its hood. Paired with seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission, 286 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque are sent to the concept’s front wheels.

Hitting peak torque from just 1,600rpm, the Golf GTI TCR should be able to accelerate quickly from a stop though the exact figures have not been released yet. All VW mentioned was the hot hatch’s ability to hit a top speed of 164mph once the electronic limiter is removed, an extra option.

Those hoping to get their hands on a production model can breathe a sigh of relief because Carscoops says the new Golf GTI TCR will be “offered in unrestricted numbers”.

Why go for the GTI when you can just get the Golf R instead? The concept has 286 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque, which is less than the R's 292 hp and 280 lb-ft. May as well spring for the top performance model if you're going for something more exciting, unless the GTI TCR costs substantially less.

There's also the matter of FWD vs AWD, which is important to consider if you plan on using the Golf year round. Came across a bunch of pictures of this concept which I wanted to share. Love the interior design on this model and I hope we see something similar with the street variant.

Those are some incredible looking concepts, though I don't know how VW can price them without detracting from Golf R sales. Last thing they want to do is offer too many variants of the Golf and cause internal competition.

So far we're seeing the Golf GTI TCR concept and who knows when VW will come out with a production model. In most cases, the production model's engine will be detuned to produce less power because these concepts show off what could be, but not what it will be.

A detuned engine can be easily reflashed to make similar figures found in the track model. The main drawback with this however is that VW has been known to be pretty stringy with aftermarket tunes. So it might be something worth holding off on until your factory warranty has expired.

Think the new Golf GTI TCR will have the option to remove the speed limiter so it may be able to hit a top speed of 264 km/h. There's also a rumor that the car may not be available in Canada since VW has not made the announcement.

Canada already gets the Golf R and has been used to it for many years. The only restriction they should put on the Canadian market are the number of these allocated. Cutting losses right away by doing that benefits them a lot unless losing some money in turn for improved brand image it the trade off they want.

I think the GTI TCR variant will be released in a very limited capacity anyways, so you're going to have to be one of the first to get your order in if you have any interest in getting one. I wouldn't be surprised if they limited it to a couple hundred units.

A couple hundred units divided by the global market and we'll be looking at double digits for North America, Europe, etc. Shouldn't be a concern because they said the GTI TCR will be “offered in unrestricted numbers”. Long waits if you don't put in an order early enough but you'll get one.
