Volkswagen Golf GTI and R to be more powerful

Finally, Volkswagen is going to challenge Focus RS by bumping up their hp with 45 additional ponies!!! It should be interesting to drive lighter Golf GTI with 345 hp under the hood

Report: Next-gen Volkswagen Golf GTI and R to be more powerful, lighter

The focus RS has 350 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque with four wheel drive. I'd be interested to see comparable numbers in the Golf though the question would be if it's also four wheel drive or not.

The new VW Golf R has 4Motion all-wheel-drive so I assume something similar could appear in the next gen Golf R.

Or they could go the Honda type R route with front wheel drive by eliminating torque steer. Won't be as drift happy as the Focus RS, but it'll still pose a challenge to Ford and it'l be more affordable.

AWD systems sends power to all wheels, which helps compensate when one of them slips and it improves traction. But FWD is lighter and better when it comes to climbing hills.

No idea how accurate they are, but motorauthority says the next Golf R could have 400 horsepower. Even if they get close to 400hp, fans will still be more than happy with that.

“The R brand is going extreme,” VW sales boss Jürgen Stackmann told Auto Express. “The role of R is that it can go beyond the rational; nobody needs a compact car with 400bhp, but is there a place (for it?) Certainly, and that’s the turf of R.”

Fortunately there are brands like ABT that will scoop it up and pick up from where VW might have left off on. There's only so much car makers can do especially with early models.
