Base Golf GTI sold out

I don't know how many of you have been on VW's Golf configurator as of late, but it appears that the 228hp base GTI variant of the Golf has been completely removed. The more powerful 241hp model is still available, and it turns out this isn't just some kind a mistake. A VW UK rep has confirmed that the '18 base GTI has sold out both in manual and DSG spec. Odds are that we probably wont see this trim return before the Mk8 models arrive in 2019.

Wow...Didn't really see that coming and I thought the Golf GTI wasn't going to be produced in limited quantities so this is a surprise. Odd that people wouldn't go for the more powerful variant instead of the base model.

I wonder why there is so much interest in the base spec? Perhaps people think they are better off going with the cheapest model and improving performance with their own aftermarket modifications. I suppose the difference in horsepower is pretty negligible between the two trims.

With a proper tune, you can probably get it to 241 hp as well if not better so I can see where people are coming from and the kind of crowd who goes for something like the Golf GTI are more prone to modding their car. Thus the lower trim. Would be nice if VW didn't limit production.

I don't think that they limited production, they just didn't anticipate so much interest in the base model. It makes no sense for them to start back up on production with the next generation models just around the corner.

So those who missed out will need to wait for the next gen GTI? Would make sense for VW to come out with something to replace the current model if they don't plan of starting production back up for it.

It's only the base model that's been sold out, so anyone who wants to get the current gen GTI, will have to upgrade to one of the higher trims. VW would be wise to offer some incentives on the existing trim levels, so they can try and sell through the remaining stock of current gen GTI's.

Agree.

The best thing they can do right now to secure sales is to run a long campaign promoting the new Golf. Folks will hold onto their dollars especially when its a product they will live with for the next 3-4 years at least.
