3 door Golf R available in Malaysia

It looks like Malaysia is offering a very exclusive variant of the Golf R. They will be opening up orders for a 3 door variant, only available in Lapiz Blue, that is limited to 10 units. It comes with the same 2.0l TSI turbocharged engine and 7 speed DSG found in the 5 door model. I don't expect these to last very long.

Reduced weight from removing an extra door? People who are aiming to shave off as much time from their laps as they can will be clamoring for one even though the engine remains the same.

I'm sure that the weight reduction is pretty negligible, and I think interest in it will probably be more a result of it's exclusivity. I do really like how the Golf R looks as a coupe though.

It's a sportier look, more in line with the R badge than a four door. Makes me wonder why VW is only offering it in Malaysia and not make it a global exclusive model. I'm sure a lot of people will be interested in one.

I recall that VW wanted to better understand the American market so this could be part of them working in the shadows on something we might soon see.
The Golf is a key product to introduce performance, they won't let it go.

Well for now U.S customers will have to make due with the two door GTI, until VW decides whether or not there is significant demand in the U.S for a different R variant. 10 units doesn't really seem like enough, if they are indeed testing the waters for consumer interest.

I have a feeling that cheaper Audi products might be taking away from VW's bottom end.
Still too bad they don't get as cheap as they do in Europe.
