2019 Golf drops hp for fuel economy

VW has announced that every 2019 FWD Golf will ditch the 1.8l turbocharged four cylinder throughout the range. The next generation models will instead use the 1.4l turbo four cylinder that's used in the Jetta. This shift has resulted in the loss of 22hp in an effort to further improve fuel economy. The 1.4l makes 147hp and 185lb-ft in the Jetta, and the 2019 has an EPA rating of 30 city, 40 highway and 34 combined.

Soon that won't be a concern with mild-hybrid system that are coming to VW. However at this rate an advanced hybrid or fully electric high performing Golf could be in the near future. By near future I mean before mid-2020's

The mild hybrid systems we've seen wont be able to completely negate this loss of power, but they will boost off the line performance. There is a vast amount of current gen VW's that haven't even passed the new WLTP, so moving to smaller and more efficient engines makes sense.

Even just the potential for what these systems can become with the right tuning and scaling up will mean a lot.
Initially we should see a greater emphasis on range than performance, if it means better sales i'm all for it. Down the road it will pave the way for performance.

22hp could easily be made up with a couple of aftermarket mods. If it brings down the entry price of the Golf, then it's really to everyone's benefit. Torque numbers have remained unchanged, so it'll still have plenty of go from a stop.

VW is at the point they can include more value, or even perceived value, by pulling in more Audi DNA. Rumors suggest it'll be closer to a BMW rival. Way to leave Honda behind.

The two brands already share a lot of components between each other. And with all the changes we're seeing lately to VW's lineup they seem to be targeting a younger demographic, which means pricing is increasingly important.

Pricing is important only to the extent that it doesn't impact value found in whatever vehicle they're interested in.

Competition is fierce. Chinese brands that have all the capital but not enough distribution are slowly creeping in.
