VW Golf turns 45 today

Its been 45 years since the Golf hit the market and ever since its been one of the best selling hatchbacks in its class. Found an interesting tidbit that since 1974 around 35 million units have sold worldwide. This equals out to one being sold every 41 seconds since it was first introduced. Its amazing how VW has managed to keep such an old car relevant.

For years the Golf was basically unopposed in the hot hatch segment and it took quite a long time for rival brands to take notice. Renault, Megane, Peugeot and even Hyundai are looking to bring some great newcomers to the class.

The Golf has been an outlier for good reason, because in most ways it was just better than many alternatives. Its styling, driving dynamics and performance (particularly in the R) are all well above what you find in competitors. That being said competition often sparks innovation so these new rivals are a good thing imo.

I wonder if eventually VW might do something more with the Golf.

Something we haven't seen before to address a growing need opposite of what the Golf is about.

If you guys haven't realized, that's with utility vehicles.
Could we eventually see a Golf crossover/CUV/etc.?

I'm not too keen on the idea, but it's likely that there will be some kind of Golf crossover coming given how many people want SUVs now.

VW said they wanted to better understand the U.S market and a Golf crossover is a key way to do it. Shifting sentiment could signal the end of the Golf as we know it.
